When it comes to my favourite wedding venues to shoot as a BC wedding photographer, Keating Farm on Vancouver Island is high up on the list. Its charming spaces, lush open fields, and adorable farm animals create the perfect setting for a memorable wedding day. Cheena and Scott’s summer solstice wedding brought out the venue’s best features, blending historical charm with modern elegance.
Keating Farm is a 27 acre family endeavor located in Cowichan Valley, British Columbia. The sprawling estate exudes vintage charm, including a fully-restored 1800s farmhouse that combines architectural details of a bygone era with a modern twist. Whether couples are seeking breathtaking views of their heritage orchards or want an indoor ceremony, Keating Farm offers many choices when it comes to ceremony sites. Similarly, couples can choose between an elegant terrace reception or a cozy barn dinner complete with warm string lights. It was for these reasons that Cheena & Scott chose to host their summer solstice wedding with Keating Farm.
It’s important to remember that this is your day, and your timeline should reflect the priorities you share as a couple, whatever that may look like! For Cheena and Scott, this meant additional time for photos. After getting ready on-site (lodging is an additional perk of this beautiful venue!) they had a first look and allotted 90 minutes for their photos together. It was a great amount of time for a true documentary experience without the undertone of feeling rushed through everything. With this extra time carved out, I captured both authentic candid moments between them as well as more posed, editorial-styled portraits. (Including one inspired by a cinematic still from the movie, Saltburn. Can you spot it? Hint: It’s the one where Scott is on the floor and Cheena is in the window frame).
Cheena and Scott embraced the venue’s charm for their wedding, blending mid-century vintage with modern touches. For their ceremony, they opted to exchange vows outdoors surrounded by panoramic views of the property as their guests looked on. Tears of joy began at the ceremony & continued well into their dinner. As a working farm, Keating Farm offers unique farm-to-table catering options including a family-style farmhouse table that brings such a cozy, intimate vibe to receptions held at this venue. I have a soft spot for speeches and they had plenty that didn’t leave a dry eye! It’s a beautiful and precious thing to see all of your favourite people all in the same place.
Cheena and Scott’s Vancouver Island wedding day was a relaxed and joyful occasion enjoyed by everyone in attendance. To be sure she didn’t miss out on any of the fun, Cheena opted for a second, dance-ready dress for their reception including personalized Chuck Taylor’s with their wedding date embroidered on the back. That wasn’t the end of the personal touches with this couple, however. They wrapped up the evening with customized shot-skis that added a playful, unique touch. This heartwarming summer solstice wedding is not one I’ll soon forget. I was completely obsessed with the overall style and how much this couple enjoyed their day together. Congratulations, Cheena and Scott!
